When Anthony started at North Side Community School as a 1st grader, he was extremely deficient in language arts and math, performing at an extremely low level. He also had behavioral issues and was described as “wild” by many at the school. Anthony went through the NSCS assessment program. He was diagnosed as a Special Needs student and identified as needing Speech Therapy at NSCS and Occupational Therapy from an outside source. Our principal, Ms. Erondu, and Anthony’s teachers developed an education plan to bring him up to grade level.
From the beginning, Anthony and his father met often with Ms. Erondu and his teachers, but Anthony continued to struggle and was held back. Despite difficulties and potential stigma, his father kept him at North Side and worked closely with our staff. Last year, Anthony was in the second grade with Ms. Cox. She taught him patiently, carefully and with great compassion to continue on his plan, Core, More and More; Anthony got his core instruction with his small class, more with Ms. Cox working with him individually, and more with extensive tutoring with Ms. Ellis.
This year, Anthony is in the third grade. He is reading and doing math at above grade level. He has matured and is a delightful young child - respectful, polite, friendly and happy. With the dedication, perseverance and collaboration of Anthony’s father and our staff, Anthony is on the path to be a successful student throughout his years in school.
