Dear Friends of North Side:
It is with a mix of sadness and gratitude that the Board of Directors announces its founding Principal, Stella Erondu, and its Executive Director, John Grote will both retire at the end of the 2018-2019 school year. Since 2009, John and Stella have played a critical role in the development and success of North Side Community School, and while we will miss them and their inspiring leadership, we wish them the best of luck in their much-deserved retirement. Janine Gorrell, who is currently the Assistant Principal in her third year at North Side, will succeed Mrs. Erondu as Principal. During the 2018-2019 school year, they will serve as co-principals to ensure a smooth transition.
Over the next year, the Board will be conducting a search to find Mr. Grote's successor as North Side Executive Director. The Board hopes to identify candidates who can help North Side continue along our schools successful trajectory. During this transition period, it is our priority to find the best individual to lead, while still maintaining a stable and effective organization.
We want to thank John and Stella for the 9 years of strong leadership, which involved many significant accomplishments, including:
- Growing enrollment from 50 students in 2009 to nearly 400 students in 2018
- Increasing MAP scores of 3rd, 4th, & 5th grade students from 20% ELA and 13.3% math in the first year of the test (2010-2011) to 82% ELA and 65% math (2016-2017).
- Providing a high quality neighborhood school when there were few choices for our families.
- Being instrumental in the receipt of 4 awards by community organizations:
2016 Charter School of the Year by the Missouri Charter Public School Association;
2016 Champions of Education Reform for closing the achievement gap
by Children’s Education Alliance of Missouri (CEAM);
2017 What’s Right with the Region Award for Racial Equality & Social Justice
from Focus St. Louis;
2017 Transformational Leadership by Cultural Leadership
Again, we cannot thank John and Stella enough for the dedication, passion, enthusiasm and motivation they have given North Side over the past 9 years. They will be greatly missed by the staff, Board, families and community partners alike. We will continue to keep you informed about the schools progress and plans for the future.
