a typical school day
Our buses arrive between 7:45 AM - 8:00 AM and our students begin their day with breakfast starting at 7:45. Instruction begins at 8:15 AM.
Morning classes are devoted to core subjects - language arts and mathematics. If there is a single item that separates our school from any other it is our singular focus on the basics. Our children know how to read and write and to add and subtract. Without mastering these foundations, our students will never achieve their potential.
Classes after lunch expand to other studies - science, social studies and student enrichment such as art and music. Continuing with the close personal attention that comes with our 15-18/1 student teacher ratio, our faculty work in small groups, and often one-on-one, to insure all of our students are reaching their highest potential.
There are two recesses every day, always outdoors (weather permitting), and the students have a chance to utilize our wide-open eight-acre campus, and our two playgrounds. Our expansive fields, so unique to an urban campus, offer opportunities for both organized and free play, and our PE staff, faculty, and aides participate in all the activities. Every student participates in three PE sessions per week. Running, jumping, and ball skills are emphasized.
Our Pre-K, Kindergarten, and First Grade classes are dismissed at 3:30 PM. Our Second, Third, Fourth and Fifth Grades have extended day and continue their classwork until 4:45 PM. We also offer extended day activities for students who are up to date on their academics. The activities are facilitated by school staff, teachers and volunteers. Programs offered in the past include: Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, music club, art club, basketball, cheerleading and robotics.
For those families with Pre-K, Kindergarten and First grade students, we do offer an After-School program, which runs from 3:30PM-6:00PM. The program includes a homework period, a planned activity, a recess and a snack and is facilitated by staff from the Stray Dog Theatre.
